Senator Mike Lee, representing Utah, posted a series of tweets on November 5, 2025, addressing both the ongoing federal government shutdown and new legislation aimed at improving diabetes treatment.
In his first tweet on November 5, Lee commented on the impact of the shutdown on holiday travel: “If your Thanksgiving travel plans are ruined—thank Democrats for their shutdown!” He attributed disruptions to the Democratic party amid continued budget negotiations in Congress.
Later that day, Lee shifted focus to healthcare policy, specifically barriers faced by Americans with diabetes. At 20:06 UTC he wrote: “A nonsensical federal classification is making it harder for Americans with diabetes to get vital treatment. Today I introduced the ISLET Act to change it and save lives. Here’s the situation: For people living with Type 1 Diabetes, the immune system mistakenly attacks islet”. This message was immediately followed by a separate tweet containing only a link: “https://t.co/BRL2Uj4j4i”.
The government shutdown referenced by Lee has led to widespread concerns over public services and travel disruptions during major holidays. Such impasses have previously affected federal agencies responsible for transportation security and air traffic control, contributing to delays and cancellations for travelers.
Lee’s introduction of the ISLET Act comes amid ongoing debates about how regulatory classifications affect access to emerging treatments for chronic conditions like Type 1 Diabetes. Current federal policies sometimes hinder the availability of innovative therapies due to outdated or overly restrictive categorizations.
