Senator Mike Lee has announced the introduction of the Department of War Restoration Act in a series of posts on social media. Lee, a U.S. Senator from Utah, made public statements about his legislative initiative and its intent to revive historical nomenclature for the United States military.
On September 2, 2025, Lee wrote, “For the first 150 years of our military’s history, Americans defeated their enemies and protected their homeland under the War Department. I’m proud to introduce the Department of War Restoration Act and return to tradition.”
Later that same day, Lee expanded on his reasoning in another post. He stated, “I am proud to introduce the Department of War Restoration Act with @RepGregSteube.
‘But Senator, don’t you often criticize needless foreign wars?’
Yes. I also oppose polite euphemisms that help politicians dodge responsibility for the deadly conflicts they often engineer and”
On September 3, 2025, Lee posted a third message consisting only of an emoji and a link: ” https://t.co/3JIadUF50N”
The proposal comes at a time when debates over U.S. military policy and transparency remain prominent in Congress. The United States originally operated under a “Department of War” from its founding until it was renamed as the “Department of Defense” in 1949 during President Harry S. Truman’s administration as part of post-World War II reforms.
Senator Mike Lee has been known for his critical stance on foreign interventions and calls for greater accountability in government terminology related to war powers.
