U.S. Senator Mike Lee began debate on March 18 for his SAVE America Act, a bill that would require proof of citizenship for voter registration and mandate the use of Voter ID across the country.
The proposed legislation aims to address concerns about election security and the integrity of American citizens’ votes. Supporters say these measures are intended to ensure only eligible voters participate in federal elections.
“The Senate often considers complex, divisive issues. Protecting the votes of American citizens is not one of them,” Lee said. “It is a simple task, and the American people are united: Pass the SAVE America Act.”
The bill would require individuals to present an eligible photo identification document before voting, states to obtain proof of citizenship in person when registering someone to vote, and states to remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls. The press release claims that under the current administration, millions of undocumented immigrants have entered communities nationwide, with some receiving driver’s licenses or other benefits that could allow them to register illegally for federal elections.
According to the official website, U.S. Sen. Mike Lee maintains offices in Salt Lake City, St. George, Vernal, Utah, and Washington, D.C., and represents the entire state of Utah as its United States Senator. The website also notes that Lee advocates for limited government, fiscal responsibility, energy independence, military strength, balanced budget amendments, term limits, and legislative action on public safety, health care and economic issues according to the official website. He offers constituent services including communication on federal matters through his offices in Utah and Washington according to the official website.
Observers will be watching how this legislation progresses in Congress as debates over election laws continue.
