U.S. Senator Mike Lee introduced legislation on April 30 to repeal the Davis-Bacon Act, a law that mandates prevailing wage rates for federally funded construction projects. The bill is cosponsored by Senators Ted Cruz, Rick Scott, Tim Scott, Katie Britt, Ron Johnson, James Lankford, and Ted Budd. Representative Eric Burlison introduced a similar measure in the House.

Supporters of the legislation argue that repealing the Davis-Bacon Act would save billions of taxpayer dollars and increase competition for federal construction contracts. According to Lee’s official website, he has championed constitutional principles and individual liberty as a U.S. senator for Utah according to the official website.

“When big government offers to help, it usually creates more problems than it fixes. The Davis-Bacon Act is no exception,” said Senator Mike Lee.”It is an antiquated piece of legislation that hurts middle class workers and every American taxpayer. Repealing this single bill would save tens of billions of tax dollars. It is high-time that Congress passes the Davis-Bacon Repeal Act.”

Senator Ted Cruz said: “Texans reject government interference in the labor market…Repealing the Davis-Bacon Act will save billions of taxpayer dollars, expand competition, and ensure that federal projects are awarded based on merit.” Other senators echoed these concerns about increased costs and administrative burdens resulting from current regulations.

The Davis Bacon Act requires all federally funded construction projects worth over $2,000 pay workers at least the “prevailing wage” in their locality; however, critics say this method relies on inaccurate estimates and flawed calculations leading to higher costs—a Congressional Budget Office analysis found repeal could save $17.8 billion over ten years.

Lee grew up in Provo as a fourth-generation Utahn according to his official biography. He received both his bachelor’s degree in political science and Juris Doctor from Brigham Young University according to his official biography. Throughout his career he has promoted limited government and free markets according to his official website.

Industry groups such as Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) support the proposed repeal: “ABC proudly supports the Davis-Bacon Repeal Act…By repealing Davis-Bacon, Congress can restore competition,” said Kristen Swearingen with ABC Government Affairs.

The future of this legislative effort remains uncertain as lawmakers continue debate over how best to manage federal spending while supporting American workers.
