The Weber State Wildcats women’s tennis team lost their Big Sky conference opener to the Idaho Vandals with a score of 6-1 on Friday in Ogden, Utah.
In doubles play, Jessica Hill and Aleks Bozinovska secured an early lead for Weber State by winning 6-3 at the #1 position. Idaho responded with a win on Court #2, tying the doubles matches at one each. The deciding match on Court #3 saw Paulina Aleksandrowicz and Nataly Valdivia Rojas take a 6-5 lead before Idaho came back to win two straight sets and the tiebreaker, clinching the doubles point.
During singles competition, Nataly Valdivia Rojas earned her first career singles victory by defeating her opponent at the #6 position with scores of 6-4 and 6-2. However, Idaho won all other singles matches:
Jessica Hill was defeated by Chenyue Xu (6-4, 6-2), Maggie Song fell to Noami Schraeder (6-7 [3-7], 6-1, 6-2), Paulina Aleksandrowicz lost to Hanna Koprowska (6-3, 7-6 [7-4]), Aleks Bozinovska was beaten by Ida Johansson (6-2, 6-3), and Naomi Johnson lost to Valentina Rodas (6-3, 6-3).
In doubles competition beyond the first match win for Weber State: Naomi Johnson and Savannah Johnson were defeated by Hanna Koprowska and Ida Johansson (6-3) in the second position; Valentina Rodas and Chenyue Xu edged out Nataly Valdivia Rojas and Paulina Aleksandrowicz in a tiebreaker (7-6 [7–3]) at #3.
The Wildcats now hold a record of 0–7 for the season. Their next match is scheduled against Northern Arizona University on Sunday morning at the Ogden Athletic Club. Northern Arizona enters that contest with a season record of 1–3 as they begin their conference schedule.
