The Weber State men’s golf team began play at the Big Sky Conference Men’s Golf Championships in Litchfield Park, Arizona on Apr. 26. The tournament is being held at Wigwam Golf Club and will run for three days.
The event is important as it marks the return of men’s golf to the Big Sky Conference postseason championships after a one-year break. The Wildcats are among several teams competing, with each squad playing 18 holes per day through Wednesday.
Weber State’s lineup includes Matthew Wilson, Ty Anderson, Bobby Kincaid, Jesus Castaneda and Markus Nanpei, with Ryan Takeshita listed as an available substitute. Wilson was named to the All-Big Sky First Team and Anderson received Honorable Mention honors when the league announced its yearly awards on Sunday.
The Wildcats have had a strong season so far with three top-4 finishes, including third place at their most recent event—the Shark Invitational at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, New York. Live scoring for the championship is available online at Scoreboard.clippd.com.
This year’s tournament follows changes within the conference that allowed men’s golf to return as a championship sport under NCAA regulations. Weber State spent last season as an affiliate member of the Summit League due to insufficient teams in the Big Sky but returned this year following Eastern Washington’s addition of men’s golf and Francis Merion joining as an affiliate member.
