The Weber State men’s golf team finished in fifth place at the Big Sky Conference Championships, according to an April 29 announcement. The tournament took place at Wigwam Golf Club in Litchfield Park, Arizona, with the Wildcats posting a final round score of 294 for a total of 2-over par 866.
The event was significant as it marked the end of the season for Weber State and provided an opportunity for individual players to earn honors and improve their rankings. After starting in fifth place with a score of 299 on Monday, the Wildcats moved up to third after a strong second round performance where they shot a collective 15-under par 273. However, they slipped back to fifth during the final day.
Matthew Wilson led Weber State with rounds of 73, 67, and a final round of 70 that included two birdies and an eagle. He finished fourth overall at six-under par (210), earning All-Tournament honors. Bobby Kincaid also placed in the top ten by tying for ninth at two-under par (214) after rounds of 74, 67, and 73.
Other notable performances included Markus Nanpei finishing nineteenth at four-over par (220), Ty Anderson tying for twenty-third at seven-over par (223), Jesus Castaneda playing two rounds with scores of 76 and 77, and Ryan Takeshita substituting in the second round with a one-under-par score of seventy-one.
Sacramento State won the team championship by setting a new conference record with a total score of twenty-three under par (841) over three rounds. They finished nine shots ahead of Idaho Vandals. Individually, Sacramento State’s Gabriel Smith secured first place after winning a playoff against teammate Jai Bahl; both had finished regulation play at nine-under before Smith clinched victory on Hole No.1 with a birdie.
Looking ahead, Sacramento State’s record-setting performance sets expectations high for next year’s competition while Weber State will look to build on its strong showing from this tournament.
