Weber State University’s softball team was narrowly defeated by Utah Tech, 5-4, in a game played at Karl Brooks Field in St. George, Utah, on Saturday. The Wildcats rallied with three runs in the seventh inning but could not overcome the Trailblazers’ response in the bottom of the same frame.

The contest remained scoreless through the first three innings as both teams struggled to generate offense. Weber State took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Apollonia Maldonado hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Victoria Rey to score. Utah Tech answered in their half of the inning with two runs, including an RBI double from Giroux and another run scored on a groundout.

Cail McCraw started for Weber State and pitched 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on three hits while striking out one batter and walking two across 86 pitches.

Neither team scored during the fifth and sixth innings, keeping Utah Tech ahead 2-1 going into the final inning. In the top of the seventh, Weber State capitalized on defensive errors by Utah Tech to take a brief 4-2 lead after Sammy Gallegos reached base and two unearned runs scored; a wild pitch brought home another runner.

Utah Tech responded immediately in their half of the seventh with three unearned runs following a fielding error and a single, securing their win at 5-4.

Jade Curiel came on in relief for Weber State, pitching two innings without allowing any hits but issuing six walks and giving up two runs while striking out three batters over 41 pitches.

Jordan McMahon led Weber State offensively with two hits. Maldonado added one hit along with her RBI sacrifice fly. Sadie Kirk also contributed with a hit and scored after being hit by a pitch.
