Weber State University’s softball team concluded the Lyman Classic in St. George, Utah, with a 1-4 record after losing both games on the tournament’s final day.
In the first game against CSU Bakersfield, Jordan McMahon put Weber State ahead early by scoring an unearned run. CSU Bakersfield responded in the second inning with three runs, including an RBI double and a walk. Sammy Gallegos scored on a fielding error to bring Weber State within one run, making it 3-2 in favor of the Roadrunners.
The teams traded runs in the fifth inning, with Tori Rey delivering an RBI single for Weber State to match CSU Bakersfield’s score that inning. The Roadrunners added two more runs in the seventh. Although Weber State managed a hit in their last at-bat, they could not close the gap and lost 7-4. Four pitchers were used by Weber State; Joslynn Veltien was charged with the loss after pitching one inning and facing eight batters.
In their second game of the day against Utah Tech, Weber State fell behind early as Utah Tech scored first with an RBI single followed by two home runs for a 3-0 lead. The Wildcats rallied in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead, powered by RBI singles from Jordan McMahon and Taegan Smith and a three-RBI double from Apollonia Maldonado. However, Utah Tech answered back strongly, adding seven more runs and securing a 13-5 win over five innings. Kendall Freidinger took the loss for Weber State after pitching three innings with two strikeouts.
Weber State will return to St. George later this month for the Beehive Classic scheduled from February 26 through March 1. Fans can watch all home and Big Sky Conference games on ESPN+.
