Weber State softball lost both games of a doubleheader to the visiting Montana Lady Griz on Apr. 17.

The outcome affects the Wildcats as they approach their final home game of the season and prepare for senior celebrations and a field renaming ceremony.

In the first game, Montana took an early lead with a home run by Mejia in the fourth inning. The Lady Griz added three more runs across the fifth and sixth innings, building a 4-0 advantage. Weber State responded in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double from Sadie Kirk that brought Abby Grundy home, followed by an RBI single from Emma Bingham scoring Kirk. Despite narrowing the gap to 4-2, Weber State could not generate further offense in the seventh inning. Grundy led Weber State at bat with two hits out of four total for her team, while Cali McCraw pitched a complete game and recorded two strikeouts.

In game two, Weber State started strong with Kirk’s sacrifice fly bringing Jordan McMahon home in the first inning. The Wildcats extended their lead to 6-0 by scoring five runs over two innings, highlighted by Bingham’s three-run homer and Kiaira Smith’s two-RBI single. However, Montana rallied starting in the fourth inning with key hits including homers from Gutierrez and Christiaens. In a decisive seventh inning, Montana hit three consecutive home runs—by Christiaens (three-run), Tarrant, and Cherms—resulting in six runs that put them ahead for good at 11-6. Kendall Freidinger pitched into the seventh but was charged with ten earned runs on ten hits; Raina Navarro finished pitching duties for Weber State.

Looking ahead, Weber State will host its final home game against Montana on Saturday where it will honor four seniors after play concludes. Before that contest begins at 11 a.m., Wildcat Softball Field will be renamed Mary Kay Amicone Field at Miller Park.
