The Weber State softball team split a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount on March 21, dropping the first game 9-2 before winning the second 4-2 at Wildcat Softball Field.
The series matters for both teams as they look to build momentum in the season. The Wildcats, now holding an 8-24 record, used timely hitting and strong pitching to bounce back after a tough opening loss.
In the first game, Weber State took an early lead when Sadie Kirk hit an RBI single to score Jordan McMahon. After Loyola Marymount responded with a two-run home run in the fourth inning, Sienna Solis tied it up for the Wildcats with another RBI. The Lions regained control in the sixth with a solo home run and then broke open the game in the seventh by scoring six runs, taking advantage of errors and extra-base hits. Kirk led Weber State offensively with two hits and one RBI. Raina Navarro started as pitcher for Weber State and was relieved by R.J. Parra late in the game.
The Wildcats rebounded in game two after falling behind by two runs through four innings. Solis drove in a run during the fifth inning to cut into LMU’s lead. In the sixth, Abby Grundy delivered a two-RBI triple that gave Weber State its first lead of the day, followed by an RBI groundout from Apollonia Maldonado to secure a 4-2 victory. Cali McCraw pitched a complete game for Weber State, allowing only three hits and striking out one batter.
