Weber State University’s softball team split its games on the second day of the Blue Collar Classic, defeating Cal Baptist 6-5 before falling to Boise State 9-5.
In the first game against Cal Baptist, Weber State overcame an early deficit. The Wildcats and Lancers exchanged runs in the opening inning, with Jordan McMahon scoring after reaching base on a throwing error and being driven in by Apollonia Maldonado. Cal Baptist took a 3-1 lead in the third inning following a two-run home run by Mede. The Lancers extended their advantage in the fourth, but Emma Bingham responded for Weber State with a three-run homer that tied the score at 4-4.
After two scoreless innings, Weber State broke through in the seventh. McMahon singled and Maldonado hit a two-run home run to left field, giving the Wildcats a decisive edge. “McMahon posted three hits and scored two runs in the game. Maldonado contributed with a home run and three RBI, tallying two hits and one run. Bingham added a home run and drove in three runs,” according to team statistics.
Kendall Freidinger pitched two innings for Weber State without allowing an earned run, while RJ Parra handled five innings on the mound.
In their second contest of the day, Weber State was unable to keep pace with Boise State’s offense. The Broncos recorded three home runs among their 12 total hits. Boise State opened scoring with a solo homer from Stroh in the first inning and expanded its lead further with additional homers from Flindt and Penberthy during a six-run third inning.
Weber State managed seven hits during the game, including extra-base contributions from Taegan Smith (triple) and Sienna Solis (double). In later innings, pinch hitter Kiaira Smith grounded out to bring home Taegan Smith as part of a sixth-inning rally attempt. Despite late efforts—highlighted by Emma Bingham advancing on Solis’s double and Mariyah Delgado driving her in—the Wildcats could not close the gap.
Pitching duties were shared among Raina Navarro, Kendall Freidinger, and Joslynn Veltien over seven innings.
“Jordan McMahon posted two hits and scored one run in her four at-bats. Taegan Smith contributed with a triple and one RBI, scoring once in three at-bats. Solis recorded two hits, including a double, and crossed home plate twice. Delgado added two hits and one RBI in her three appearances at the plate,” according to postgame statistics.
