Weber State University’s softball team began the Beehive Classic in St. George, Utah, with a split record after two games on Thursday. The Wildcats suffered a 9-1 loss to the University of Utah before bouncing back with a 14-2 win over Utah Tech.
In the first game against Utah, Weber State fell behind after Utah’s Gomez hit a three-run home run in the third inning. Lyon and Wilson followed with solo homers, giving the Utes a strong lead. Weber State managed to score in the third when Sammy Gallegos crossed home plate following singles from Gallegos and Taegan Smith. However, Utah extended its advantage in the fourth inning with another home run by Gomez as part of a four-run frame. The game ended after five innings due to the run rule.
Kendall Freidinger started for Weber State, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing six hits and five earned runs while striking out two batters. Taegan Smith drove in Weber State’s only run, while Gallegos and Apollonia Maldonado each recorded hits.
The Wildcats reversed their fortunes in their second game against Utah Tech. After falling behind early due to a solo home run by Kahahawai, Weber State responded with nine runs in the second inning. Key plays included Sadie Kirk’s single, Cailin Quinney’s double, Riley Whalen’s two-RBI double, and a three-run homer from Maldonado.
Weber State continued to add runs throughout the game. In total, Taegan Smith collected three hits—including a double—and drove in three runs. Maldonado finished with four RBI and Whalen contributed two hits and three RBI.
Raina Navarro pitched all five innings for Weber State against Utah Tech, giving up two earned runs on three hits and five walks.
The Beehive Classic continues for Weber State with upcoming games scheduled against Utah Valley on February 27 at 5:30 p.m., at Utah Tech on February 28 at 5:30 p.m., and two games at Southern Utah on March 1 at noon and 2:30 p.m.
